Dot Matrix Printers
A dot matrix printer is a type of computer printer with a print head that moves back and forth over the paper much like a typewriter would do. The printer head hits the page with such an impact that it leaves a mark on the paper each time. In order for this to happen the dot matrix printer has a metal rod or wire that is driven forward by a tiny electromagnet. The rod is propelled forward so that it hits a ribbon that then leaves an imprint of the ink on the paper to create the desired letter or graphic.
Back in the 1980’s the dot matrix printer was considered to be one of the best printers for home and personal use. At that time it was considered great because of the versatility and the face these printers were relatively inexpensive for the time. However, over time the dot matrix printer started to show flaws. One such flaw is the fact that the printing would lose its quality and would become hard to read when photocopied. The ribbons on the matrix printers did not last a long time either and had to be replaced on a regular basis. It was clearly evident when the ribbon was becoming worn when the letters would begin to fade away in much the same way as they do now with inkjet printers when the ink is running low.
There are some advantages to using a dot matrix printer versus other type of printers. Dot matrix printers can print on multi-stationary or carbon copies. This type of impact printer is very cost effective in that it costs very little per page. One of the different things about a dot matrix printer is that they are able to use a continuous paper supply rather than using individual sheets of paper. One good thing about using a dot matrix printer with its ribbon is that the ribbon will not easily dry out if not used an extended period of time.
However, like any other printer, the dot matrix also has it disadvantages. Anyone who has used a dot matrix printer will know that they can be very noisy during printing. Unlike laser and inkjet printers, dot matrix printers are not capable of printing high-resolution graphics and they have limited colour performance. The major disadvantage of using a dot matrix printer is that they are considerably slow. The printer head must move back and forth several times before one line is completely printed on the page. They should not be used in cases where speed and efficiency are needed.
